British Airways has canceled approximately 1,700 flights scheduled for Monday, September 9, affecting nearly 280,000 people due to a two-day strike by pilots represented by the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA). The industrial action began at 00:00 (local time) on Monday, and will end on Tuesday, September 10. As of 06:00 on Monday, the airline has canceled nearly 100 percent of their scheduled flights on Monday through Tuesday, and residual delays and cancelations are likely on Wednesday, September 11.  Pilots have also called for another strike to take place on Friday, September 27.

British Airways released a statement on Sunday saying that the industrial action will have a "significant impact" on their flight operations, and advised travelers not to go to the airport if their flight is canceled. The airline is offering to re-book and refund passengers booked on canceled flights.

Associated flight disruptions, including delays and cancelations, are to be expected during the strikes.

British Airways and BALPA have been in a nine-month negotiation over pilots' pay and conditions. This is the first instance of a global strike by pilots. Both British Airways and BALPA have indicated that they are willing to begin new negotiations.

Potentially impacted travelers are advised to confirm the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport and to contact the airline for more information.
