Somalia News Alert

Al-Shabaab militants kill five in attack on military convoy in Middle Shabelle province September 8; similar attacks expected over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/9/2019, 12:00 AM until 9/12/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Middle Shabelle province

Al-Shabaab militants targeted an African Union peacekeeping mission forces in Somalia (AMISOM) convoy with twin roadside explosions near Mahaday in Middle Shabelle province on Sunday, September 8. The blasts left five people dead and wounded several others, most of whom were Burundian soldiers.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the vicinity of the attack. Similar attacks are to be expected in Somalia over the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks by the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Somalia are advised to avoid the affected area, monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
