The Aar Li Nu Bokk opposition coalition have called for a demonstration in Dakar on Friday, September 13, to denounce alleged corruption in the oil and gas sector and call for greater transparency in government efforts to exploit the country's natural resources. Protesters are expected to gather at Place de l'Obelisque at 15:00 (local time) and march to the RTS Radio Station roundabout. Related protests may be held in other urban centers.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near all protest sites. Clashes between protesters, as well as between protesters and security forces, cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible over the coming weeks.
Aar Li Nu Bokk has staged regular anti-government demonstrations since June 14, following a report disclosing the involvement of President Macky Sall's brother in fraudulent gas concession deals.
Previous demonstrations have been forcibly dispersed by police and several activists arrested on September 5.
Individuals in Senegal are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence near demonstration sites.
