Mali: Protests to denounce insecurity in the north and center September 9

Mali News Alert

Protests break out in Timbuktu, Menaka, and Bandiagara on September 9 to denounce state insecurity; further protests expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/11/2019, 12:00 AM until 9/14/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Timbuktu, Menaka, Bandiagara, Mopti region

Protests broke out on Monday, September 9, in Timbuktu (north), Menaka (northeast), and Bandiagara (center), to denounce the persisting insecurity in northern and central Mali and demand that more roads be built to open up those areas to the rest of the country. In Timbuktu, protesters have hampered access to the local airport; as of Wednesday, September 11, the blockade is expected to continue until further notice. Further protests have been called for the coming days, notably in the northern city of Gao (northeast).

Individuals in Mali are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all political events or large public gatherings due to significant security concerns (e.g. unrest, risk of terrorist attack). The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
