Several civil society groups have called for rallies to protest gender-based violence in Johannesburg from Friday, September 13, through Saturday, September 14. On Friday, participants plan to gather at 03:00 (local time) and shut down the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton. Activists plan to meet at 11:00 on Saturday at Waterfall Park in Midrand before marching to Waterfall Corner Shopping Center dressed in purple.
A heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions are expected near all protest sites. Associated protests in major urban areas are likely in the coming days.
Protests against gender-based violence have taken place throughout South Africa since September 3 sparked by a slew of high-profile rapes and murders. A trial over the sexual assault of the girl is taking place in Pretoria and is due to end on September 20.
Individuals in Johannesburg, and South Africa in general, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
