The funeral for former President B.J. Habibie is scheduled to be held in the capital Jakarta on Thursday, September 12. Habibie will be buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Thursday afternoon (local time). Additional police and military personnel have reportedly been deployed to the cemetery to manage crowds attending the funeral, which is expected to be led by President Joko Widodo. Heightened security measures, crowded conditions, and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the area.
The government has also declared a three-day national period of mourning from Thursday through Saturday, September 14.
Habibie was Indonesia’s third president and served from May 1998 to October 1999. He passed away in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 11.
Individuals in Jakarta, and Indonesia more generally, are advised to keep abreast of the situation, respect local customs, refrain from discussing political topics in public or on social media, anticipate heightened security measures and transportation disruptions near funeral events, and avoid public gatherings as a precaution.
