Civil society group Urgence Panafricaniste has called for a protest to be held in Niamey on Saturday, September 14, to denounce the use of the CFA franc currency and denounce what they perceive as the persisting French influence over its former colonies. Protesters are expected to gather at 08:00 (local time) at Place de la Concertation.
A heightened security presence along with localised transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protests.
Individuals in Niamey are advised to avoid all demonstrations as violence may flare up without warning.
