A boat carrying 60 local tourists sunk into the Godavari river, in Andhra Pradesh state on Sunday, September 15, after colliding with a rock near Devipatnam village. Officials have confirmed at least 12 fatalities, and another 20 people are missing. Rescue efforts have evacuated 26 people safely and are still ongoing as of Monday, September 16.
Authorities have suspended all boating services in the region until further notice. According to the police, the boat was operating without a licence.
Andhra Pradesh state has no regulatory authority to control water transport. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), an average of 30 people die in boat mishaps every year in the state.
Individuals in India are advised to avoid traveling by boat when conditions are rough at sea, or on boats that are overloaded or in poor condition.
