Clashes between two communities causes disruption in the Sololá department September 18; follow local authority directives

Reports indicate that a confrontation between resident of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán and Nahualá turned violent, leaving at least four dead and over 30 injured on Wednesday, September 18. The confrontation saw a series of altercations and violence, and groups erected roadblocks along the Pan-American Highway. Following the confrontation, the Sololá department governor appealed to President Jimmy Morales to declare a state of siege.

Continued violence and associated transportation disruptions remain possible in the coming several days. Should it reoccur, a heightened security presence is to be expected.  


Individuals in the Sololá department are advised to monitor developments, prepare for associated disruptions to transportation, remain indoors when possible, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
