Event

The United Nation's Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has announced the reinforcement of its presence in the eastern South Kivu province on Monday, September 16, following deadly intercommunal clashes in the Minembwe area in early September. A heightened security presence is expected in the coming months in the area.

Context

Deadly clashes between members of the Bembe and Banyamulenge communities have erupted since May in Minembwe and its surroundings after one of the leaders of the Banyamulenge community was killed. At least 34,000 people have been displaced since then due to the violence.

Advice

Individuals in South Kivu province, particularly around Yumbi, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for violent activity, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
