Event

Dalit rights activists are gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as of 10:50 (local time) on Saturday, September 21, to demand the reconstruction of a recently demolished Dalit temple and the release of 96 protesters who were arrested for rioting at an August 21 rally. Participants plan to march to Tughlakabad, where the temple was demolished, according to local media outlets.

A heightened security presence and significant traffic disruptions are likely along the march route. Violent clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished a Dalit temple on August 10 following an order by the Supreme Court. Dalit rights activists held related protests in New Delhi on August 13 and August 21.

Advice

Individuals in New Delhi are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
