Members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered on Tuesday, September 24, at 14:20 (local time) at Sylhet's registry ground to call for BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's release. Zia was charged with corruption in February 2018. On Friday, September 20, BNP leaders demanded  resignation of current government and called for fresh elections.

Further public rallies are set to take place on Thursday, September 26, in Mymensingh, and on Saturday, September 29, in Rajshahi. Supporters may hold another public rally in Rangpur at a later date, though BNP did not immediately announce further details

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest.
