Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be Islamist militants, killed 15 people in an attack in Mocimboa da Praia (Cabo Delgado province) on the evening (local time) of Monday, September 23. The assailants reportedly raided the district headquarters of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) party.

Further militant attacks are possible in Cabo Delgado province over the coming days and weeks.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
