Event

A group of militants launched a complex attack on a military checkpoint in the city of Bir al-Abd (North Sinai province) on Friday, September 27. According to media reports, around 30 militants assaulted the checkpoint using civilian vehicles and small arms. At least seven soldiers and one civilian were killed, and another ten wounded, in the attack. Egyptian forces reportedly conducted multiple airstrikes in the area following the incident. The Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Similar attacks are to be expected in North Sinai province over the near term.

Context

The attack comes as security forces continue to carry out counterterrorism raids in the area under the auspices of "Comprehensive Operation - Sinai 2018," which aims to neutralize militant and terrorist groups operating in the Sinai, Nile Delta, and the Western Desert.
