Palestinians protest in Jerusalem and Ramallah October 1; further demonstrations possible over the near term

Palestinian protesters staged demonstrations in Jerusalem and Ramallah on Tuesday, October 1, to denounce the alleged torture of detainee Samer al-Arbid. Al-Arbid, who was detained in September for his alleged involvement in a bombing attack, was hospitalized during interrogation by Israeli forces. Police dispersed a gathering of approximately 50 people in Jerusalem on Tuesday, detaining three protesters. In Ramallah, hundreds of protesters burned tires and hurled stones at security forces, who responded with tears gas and sound bombs.

Further protests are possible in the coming days. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around any demonstration site.
