Seasonal rains have caused deadly flooding throughout Niger as of Tuesday, October 1. According to local authorities, 211,366 people have been affected by the floods, which have resulted in at least 57 fatalities. At least 16,375 homes have also been destroyed. The Zinder, Maradi, and Agadez regions are the most affected. Associated transportation and business disruptions are likely in areas affected by flooding.
The rainy season in Niger typically lasts from June through September.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
