The Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental group has called for a week of protests in Brisbane, starting on the evening (local time) of Sunday, October 6, through Friday, October 11. In addition to planned events, the group called for non-violent action of civil disobedience, with the aim to occupy the city through the week.
On Thursday, September 10, participants will gather in front of the parliament house of Queensland at 12:00.
On Friday, September 11, occupation and shut down of the William Jolly Bridge is scheduled to start at 10:00.
A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected near all protest sites.
The Extinction Rebellion environmental group has organized disruptive protests around the world since November 2018 to demand increased action to address climate change issues. XR is planning a series of international protests starting the week of Monday, October 7. Civil disobedience action by XR in Brisbane's CBD caused significant transport disruptions on Tuesday, October 1.
Individuals in Brisbane are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations, prepare for associated transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
