South Africa News Alert

Ongoing protest reported in Cape Town October 7; traffic at standstill

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/7/2019, 12:00 AM until 10/7/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Cape Town

Circulation has been prohibited in Cape Town between Military Road and Sonnet Way in both directions, as of the morning (local time) on Monday, October 7, due to an ongoing protest. Protests are also being reported in Khayelitsha, with road closures between Pama Road and Alium Way in both directions. Reports indicate that protesters are burning tires on roads and have thrown stones at vehicles, which prompted police forces to close a portion of the road. The cause of the protest remains unclear. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area. Significant traffic disruptions are likely in the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in the area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, and seek alternative routes.
