Indonesia Security Minister Wiranto was attacked by a knife-wielding man during a visit to the city of Labuan (Banten province) on Thursday, October 10. Wiranto and a police chief were both stabbed, but are reportedly in a stable condition.
Two suspects have been arrested following the attack. According to authorities, the assailants have allegedly been exposed to IS radicalism but no direct link to local terrorist groups have been confirmed. Further details are still emerging.
The attack comes several days ahead of President Joko Widodo's inauguration for his second term in office on Sunday, October 20. According to Indonesian intelligence, several attempts to disrupt the inauguration by extremist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) have been reported over the last several days.
In May 2019, authorities announced the arrest of six suspects allegedly plotting an attempt on Wiranto's life, as well as three other prominent political figures.
Individuals in Pandelang are advised advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
