Officials report that heavy rain and consequent landslides across western Honduras have resulted in the deaths of at least three people as of Friday, October 11. An additional 700 people have been impacted by the inclement weather, which has primarily affected the provinces of Ocotepeque, Copán, Lempira, Intibucá, Santa Barbara, and Comayagua. Significant damage has been reported across the aforementioned regions; at least 100 homes have been flooded and two bridges have collapsed as a result of the rainfall.
Further rainfall is forecast to continue through Saturday, October 12, with intermittent heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Transportation disruptions, including road closures and train delays and cancelations, and communication disruptions are expected in the coming hours and days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
