The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in Katsuura (Chiba) on Saturday, October 12, at 18:22 (local time) at a depth of 59.5 km (37 mi). The earthquake occurred about 55 km (34 mi) southeast of Katsuura.
There are ongoing evacuation orders, power outages, and weather advisories in the Chiba prefecture due to Typhoon Hagibis, which is scheduled to make landfall in Japan later on Saturday.
There were no immediate reports of injuries and no tsunami warning was issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
