On Monday, October 14, British police have ordered a halt to Extinction Rebellion (XR) demonstrations in London after severe transportation and business disruptions were caused by the protests throughout the week prior. Police forces reportedly cleared Trafalgar Square of protesters and tents, and demanded that any assembly in the capital cease by 21:00 (local time). Dispersed protests were reported despite the ban on the morning of Tuesday, October 15, notably near the Department for Transport in Westminster, as protesters reportedly glued themselves to the building.
A heightened security presence and transport disruptions, including traffic and public transport delays, are expected in the vicinity.
The Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental group has organized disruptive protests around the world since November 2018 to demand increased action to address climate change issues. XR held a series of international protests between October 7-14.
Individuals in London are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations, expect transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
