A nationwide general strike is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, and Friday, October 25, which will have significant impact on transportation services in major cities, including bus, tram, train, and air. The general strike is organized by public and private employees to call for higher wages and improved pension programs, among other grievances.
Trenord, Trenitalia and Italo railway staff are set to go on strike nationwide from 21:00 (local time) on Thursday through 21:00 on Friday.
Toll booth staff will also strike nationwide from Thursday at 22:00 until 12:00 on Friday. There will be significantly reduced service at all toll booths and heavy traffic is to be expected.
Air transport staff will hold their strike from 00:01 through 23:59 on Friday. Flight delays and cancellations are therefore to be expected at all airports nationwide.
Maritime and port staff will hold their strike from 00:01 through 23:59 on Friday.
In Rome, in addition to transportation staff, school and waste collection staff will participate in the strike, likely causing crowded conditions and significant disruption throughout the city on Friday.
Individuals in Italy, and particularly in Milan and Rome, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
