French authorities announced on Wednesday, October 16, that two French researchers have been detained and jailed in Iran since June and have demanded their immediate release. On Wednesday, October 9, the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs updated its travel advisory for Iran, stating, "due in particular to the arbitrary arrest and detention practices of the Iranian security and intelligence services, visiting Iran today poses risks." It has also warned that contacts of foreign nationals with the local population were surveilled, notably for those in universities.
Similar arrests of foreign nationals are possible in Iran in the near term.
Individuals in Iran are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
