Dairy farmers in Karnataka state are planning to hold a mass demonstration in the city of Mandya on Wednesday, October 23, to denounce an international trade agreement. Demonstrators plan to gather on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway near the Silver Jubilee Park to block traffic. A rally is also expected to be held outside of the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The farmers claim that the trade agreement will end the local dairy sector by allowing other countries to import cheaper milk and milk products into the country.
A heightened police presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in Mandya and along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.
Individuals in Mandya, and Karnataka state more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, plan alternative routes, and allow additional time to travel.
