Heavy rainfall and consequent flooding have left one dead in Cairo on Wednesday, October 23. Media reports indicate that the victim was electrocuted after the rain hit electricity lines. The rain has been impacting the capital since the afternoon (local time) of Tuesday, October 22, leading to significant transportation and business disruptions.

Traffic disruptions, crowded conditions at metro stations, as well as flight delays at Cairo International Airport (CAI) were reported on the evening of Tuesday. Terminal 1 at CAI was reportedly flooded.

Authorities ordered all schools and universities in in Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia to close on Wednesday.

More rainfall is forecast to continue through Saturday, October 26. Transportation disruptions, along with possible flash floods, are expected in the coming hours and days.


Individuals in Cairo are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
