Haiti News Alert

Protest activity reported across Port-au-Prince on October 23; heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions expected over the coming hours

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/23/2019, 12:00 AM until 10/24/2019, 11:59 PM (America/Port-au-Prince). COUNTRY/REGION Port-au-Prince

As of the afternoon (local time) of Wednesday, October 23, a violent mob of approximately 200 people has set fire to the front gates of the National Society of Industrial Parks (SONAPI) in Port-au-Prince. Protest activity has also been reported near Carrefour de l'Aéroport, Petion-Ville, Rue Panamericaine, and Nazon.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the above-mentioned areas over the coming hours.

Haiti has faced numerous demonstrations in recent months calling for greater government transparency after several public officials, including President Jovenel Moïse, were implicated in a scandal related to the alleged misuse of PetroCaribe funds. Protests have segmented society and exacerbated an already unstable political situation.

Individuals in Port-au-Prince are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Haiti remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
