Opposition supporters and police clash in Butaleja (Eastern region) October 27; further opposition protests likely

Police forces fired tear gas and live ammunition at supporters of the opposition Forum for Change (FDC) party in Butaleja (Estern region) on Sunday, October 27. Supporters had gathered for a meeting about their constitutional rights, however, the police had reportedly unauthorized the meeting to take place. Clashes reportedly lasted for about five hours.

Further opposition gatherings and protests are likely across the country in the coming days and week. A heightened security presence is likely around any protest site. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.  


Individuals Uganda are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
