Unifor, the labor union representing 5000 Metro Vancouver bus drivers and workers, issued a 72-hour strike notice on Monday, October 28. According to the union, the Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC) has failed to meaningfully address workers’ concerns about working conditions, wages, and benefits during ongoing negotiations. Union leaders said that the CMBC has until 23:59 (local time) on Thursday, October 31, or industrial actions that will affect services will begin. As of Monday, Unifor has not confirmed what strike action will be held but said it could range from rolling strikes or work-to-rule (strictly following official working rules and hours). Further information can be found on the union's website here.
Individuals in Vancouver are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate disruptions to public bus services if the strike is held, and to plan alternative modes of transportation.
