Event

Opposition candidate Alberto Fernandez won the Argentine presidential election on Sunday, October 27, ousting current President Mauricio Macri. Fernandez won 47.79 percent of the vote with 90 percent of the ballots counted, putting him past the 45 percent required to avoid a runoff. Macri won 40.71 percent and conceded the race on Sunday evening (local time), congratulating his political rival.

Demonstrations were reported in Buenos Aires following the result, primarily led by Fernandez's supporters. Additional protests are possible over the coming several days in Buenos Aires and other urban centers. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions should be expected in the vicinity of any protests.

Context

Fernandez faces an embattled Argentine economy, as well as a seemingly divided nation as he takes office. Economic investments have been put on hold since his candidacy emerged, as his policies will likely look towards increasing social spending and higher government debt as a result to improve domestic social conditions.

Advice

Individuals in Argentina, and particularly in Buenos Aires, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
