Event

Cameroonian state media announced on Tuesday, October 29, that at least 42 people have died in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Bafoussam (West region). Search and rescue operations halted at 20:00 (local time) on Tuesday due to rain and the associated concern of another landslide. Authorities have asked residents in the area to relocate to safer neighborhoods. However, emergency personnel are expected to continue the search and rescue efforts on Wednesday, October 30, as dozens are feared missing under the rubble of destroyed homes. Approximately 13 homes were immediately submerged in the landslide.

Further rainfall is forecast in Bafoussam over the coming days, which may cause additional landslides. Consequent transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas over the near term.

Advice

Individuals in Bafoussam are advised to avoid the area of the landslide and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
