Tropical storm Matmo hits southern and central Vietnam October 30; heavy rain, flooding, and transportation disruptions expected

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has forecast typhoon Matmo to make landfall at around 16:00 (local time) on the coast of Quang Ngai and Ninh Thuan provinces on Wednesday, October 30.

As of 13:00 (local time),Tropical storm Matmo was located at approximately 13.2°N 111.0°E (map here) with wind speeds of 74 kph (43 mph). The storm is forecast to move westward at a speed of 15-20 kph (9-12 mph) and downgrade to a tropical depression as it reaches Cambodia on Thursday, October 31.

The typhoon is forecast to bring 300-400mm (12-16 in) of rain in the Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, and Ninh Thuan provinces, and 400-600mm (16-23 in) of rain in the Binh Dinh and Khan Hoa provinces through Thursday. More heavy rain is expected in central provinces through Tuesday, November 5.

Business and transportation disruptions are likely, along with localized power cut, landslides, and flooding.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
