The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado watch for Washington, DC, Baltimore (Maryland state), and surrounding areas in Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania states on Thursday, October 31. The watch will stay in effect until 00:00 (local time) on Friday, November 1. A line of severe storms and possible isolated tornadoes are forecast to pass over the DC metro area between 19:00 and 23:00 on Thursday night. The storms are expected to bring bursts of rain with the possibility of hail and potentially damaging winds with gusts of up to 120 kph (75 kph) across the region.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, and take appropriate precautions. The safest place to be in a building in the event of a tornado is in the basement or ground floor, or in an interior hallway or stairwell. Avoid doors, windows, and walls. If a tornado is approaching, crouch face down as low as possible to the floor and cover your head with your hands, or a mattress if possible, to protect your head from falling debris.
