An improvised explosive device (IED) killed one soldier in Santa Rosa (Quezon province) at around 16:30 (local time) on Sunday, November 3. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Monday, November 4, but police suspect the involvement of the New People's Army (NPA).

A heightened security presence is expected in the area of the incident area over the coming hours and days. Avoid the area.


The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPA). The NPA - made up of an estimated 3200 fighters as of the end of 2015 - has waged an insurgency in the country for nearly 50 years.


Individuals in Quezon are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments..
