Nigeria News Alert

Flood alert issued for five southern states November 4; additional rain and traffic disruptions likely in the coming days

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/5/2019, 12:00 AM until 11/8/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Edo state, Delta state, Anambra, Rivers state, Nigeria

Event

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issued a red alert due to risk of flooding in the southern states of Edo, Delta, Anambra, Rivers, and Bayelsa on Monday, November 4. The alert was issued following heavy rain, which has affected the areas in the past few days. The NIHSA has urged local authorities to issue evacuation plans for communities located along the Niger River, in the event of flooding.

Associated power outages and commercial, transportation, and communications disruptions are to be expected in the areas over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
