Event

As of Tuesday, November 12, hazardous air quality levels have again been registered in Delhi, due to an increase of agricultural fire activity in the Punjab and Haryana states. The air quality index (AQI) reached 367 in Delhi and 578 in the neighboring city of Noida at around 13:00 (local time). According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the situation is expected to persist over the coming days.

The government has warned against engaging in any outdoor activities and a ban has been issued on hot-mix plants and stone crusher plants in Delhi-NCR.

Context

Health officials declared a public health emergency on November 1 due to the "Severe+" level of air pollution in New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), and transport authorities implemented and odd-even road rationing scheme across the city, effective between through Friday, November 15, as part of governmental anti-pollution measures.

An AQI reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200+ unhealthy.

Advice

Individuals in New Delhi and the National Capital Region are advised to monitor the situation, limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes, and wear N95 rated masks for protection. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise increased caution. Individuals are advised to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
