Authorities declare state of emergency in Luxor ahead of Saint George commemorations November 11-17; heightened security expected

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in Luxor, ahead of celebrations to commemorate the birth of Saint George of Lydda from Monday, November 11, through Sunday, November 17. More than one million Christians and Muslims from across the country are expected to attend the celebrations, which will mainly be held at the Saint Georges Cathedral of Luxor throughout the week. A heightened security presence, along with associated traffic disruptions, are to be expected in Luxor over the coming hours and days. 


Individuals in Egypt, and particularly in Luxor, are advised to monitor the situation, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, report suspicious behavior and objects to the authorities, remain vigilant when visiting areas vulnerable to terrorist attacks (e.g. tourist sites, churches, international and government buildings, public transportation hubs, etc.), and anticipate associated security operations in the near term.
