Event

The mayor of Venice declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, November 13, after days of heavy rainfall led to the second-highest floodwaters on record in the city. Water levels reached a peak of 187 cm (73.6 in) at 22:00 (local time) on Tuesday, November 12, before falling to 145 cm (57.1 in) on Wednesday morning. Water levels are expected to increase throughout the day on Wednesday and remain high throughout the week despite a temporary break in rainfall, which is expected to resume on Friday, November 15.

Heavy flooding and rainfall and associated disruptions have been reported throughout the Veneto region. Officials stated on Wednesday that a man died after being electrocuted while pumping water out of his house on the island of Pellestrina.

Further heavy rainfall and flooding are expected in Venice and across the Veneto region over the coming days. Transportation and business disruptions are likely in affected areas.

Advice

Individuals in Venice are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, confirm road conditions before setting out, and anticipate disruptions to transportation and business in flood-affected areas. Remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
