The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported on Friday morning (local time), November 15, that a tsunami threat warning had expired following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck around 138 km (85 mi) northwest of the island of Ternate (North Maluku province) on Thursday, November 14. Neither is there an extent tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat to other coastlines in the Molucca Sea from the earthquake. No casualties or major material damages were immediately reported.
Aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours and days.
Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
