US: Solidarity rallies planned in New York City November 15

United States of America News Alert

Rallies to call for peace in Colombia are expected to be held in New York City (New York state) on November 15; localized disruptions possible around the demonstration sites

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/15/2019, 12:00 AM until 11/15/2019, 11:59 PM (America/New_York). COUNTRY/REGION New York, Washington Square Park, UN Headquarters

At least three rallies are being organized in New York City (New York state) on Friday, November 15, to call for peace in Colombia between the government and ex-FARC members. The first demonstration will be held outside of the UN headquarters at 15:30 (local time). Participants will then move to Washington Square Park at 16:30 and finally gather at the New School For Social Research at 18:30.

A heightened police presence and localized traffic disruptions are possible around all rally sites.

Associated rallies are being organized under the banner “Defense of Peace and Life in Colombia” on November 15 in several countries, including Switzerland, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. The demonstrations are being held to highlight ongoing human rights violations in Colombia and to denounce the government’s breach of the peace agreement. A peace deal between FARC leadership and the Colombian government was ratified by the Colombian congress in November 2016, officially ending an armed conflict that killed more than 260,000 people over five decades. However, some dissident ex-FARC militants remain active, notably in the Colombian-Ecuadorian border region.

Individuals in New York City are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate possible traffic disruptions, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
