Event

As of Friday, November 15, at least 370,000 people have been displaced and 22 others presumed dead across the country following heavy rain and associated flooding affecting the country since early October. The Hiraan region, notably the town of Beledwene, is reported to be the most affected. Significant infrastructural damages have been reported, notably on roads, while harvests have also been destroyed, raising the fear of exacerbating hunger issues. Aid organizations have also warned of the possibility of disease in the affected areas, including malaria and cholera. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the situation could worsen as more rain may fall in the coming days.

Further disruptions are expected in the areas affected by the flooding in the coming days and weeks.

Advice

Individuals present in Somalia are advised to keep abreast of the situation, confirm road conditions before heading out, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
