The Iranian government reduced gas subsidies in the early hours (local time) on Friday, November 15, leading to an increase in gas prices of up to 50 percent. Protests were reported in several cities across the country. In Mashhad, activists abandoned their cars to block traffic and in Sirjan, protesters tried to set fire to an oil depot. Riot police used tear gas to disperse activists. Nationwide internet disruptions were reported on Friday, through to the morning on Saturday, November 16.

A heightened security presence is expected in all major cities across Iran, as well as continued nationwide internet disruptions. Further protests are possible in the coming days.

Individuals in Iran are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, budget extra time to reach their destinations if traveling through areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
