Protest reported in Lilongwe October 1; additional protests possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/20/2019, 12:00 AM until 11/22/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Blantyre). COUNTRY/REGION Lilongwe

A protest erupted in Lilongwe's Old Town on Wednesday, November 20, leading to business and transportation disruptions in the area. Traders staged demonstrations against street vendors, accusing them of selling goods outside of designated areas.

The protest prompted local authorities to announce that they would drive street vendors out of the streets. Despite the authorities' announcement, additional protests are possible in Lilongwe over the near term. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around any demonstration site. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Lilongwe are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and public gatherings, anticipate transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
