The Trans Generation civil society group is planning a march on Saturday, November 23, in Kyiv to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance. Supporters will gather at Mykhailivs'ka Square from 12:00 to 14:00 (local time) to commemorate people killed in transphobia attacks across the world. Associated counterprotests by ultra-right organizations are possible.
A heightened police presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated in the area.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is annually observed throughout the world on November 20. According to organizations in Ukraine, no fatalities from transphobic attacks have been recorded in the country in 2019. However, in 2018 a similar rally was blocked by ultra-right organization who threw smoke bombs amid a heavy police presence.
Individuals in Kyiv are advised to monitor the situation for potential gatherings and protests, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions and a heightened security presence around the event, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
