Algeria’s defense ministry released a statement on Wednesday, November 20, stating that eight people planning to join jihadists in the Sahel were arrested in a series of raids. The operations took place in Ghardaia and Relizane provinces on Tuesday, November 19. Further details regarding the raids were not immediately released. However, the Islamic State (IS) is claiming that eight Algerian soldiers were killed during an operation in Tamanrasset. According to IS, two fighters refused to surrender and engaged the soldiers before being killed. The claim has not been independently confirmed and the government did not report any military casualties.
