Workers of the nine Bangladesh state-owned jute mills in Khulna staged a hunger procession in the morning (local time) of Monday, November 25, blocking the Natun Rasta intersection of the Khulna-Jashore highway at around 10:00. Additional hunger processions have been called to take place at different mill gates in Khulna from 08:00 to 17:00 on Wednesday, November 27.

Further rallies are scheduled throughout the city on Monday, December 2, and a strike has been called on Thursday, December 5. Protesters warn the movement could continue if their demands are not met.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protest events. Commercial disruptions are also likely in the coming days. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Jute mill workers have staged demonstrations, strikes, and blockades in recent months to protest late payment of wages, cancellation of public-private ownership, and have called for increased job security. Around 50,000 people have participated in protests nationwide since March to push the workers 11-points demand.

Individuals in Khulna are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate significant transportation disruptions, and avoid all public gatherings and protests as a precaution.
