Nigeria News Alert

Civil society groups to hold demonstrations nationwide on November 27; heightened security presence expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/26/2019, 12:00 AM until 11/27/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria, Abuja

Event

Numerous unions and civil society groups will hold nationwide protests on Wednesday, November 27, to demand the release of detained political activists, including prominent protest leader and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. Demonstrations are expected to take place across the 36 states of the country, notably around local houses of assembly, although the main event is expected in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where protesters have vowed to storm the National Assembly.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the vicinity of the protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Sowore was arrested by Department of State Services officers in Lagos on August 3, ahead of a planned August 5 mass protests under the title "#RevolutionNow" to demand greater democracy and governance. He has been charged with treason and money laundering.

Advice

Individuals in Abuja and other urban areas are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
