Event

The Front National pour la Défense de la Constitution (FNDC) opposition coalition has called for funeral processions in Conakry on Friday, December 6, for recently deceased protesters. FNDC leaders are also calling for nationwide marches on Tuesday, December 10. Representatives of the coalition did not immediately announce details regarding times or locations of either the funeral processions or the marches as of Tuesday, December 3.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near all demonstrations sites and processions.

Context

The FNDC has organized several opposition demonstrations since October 14. Clashes between security forces and protesters have left at least 17 people dead, including three in a protest in Conakry on November 14. Opposition leaders announced on November 18 that they intend to hold nationwide protests every week until the government adheres to its demands.

Opposition members allege that President Alpha Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution to then run for a third presidential term in late 2020. Condé has now publicly called for constitutional change regarding presidential term limits.

Advice

Individuals in Conakry, and Guinea more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, minimize movements across Conakry, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
