Finland News Alert

Major trade unions plan to hold a nationwide three-day strike from December 9-11, with up to 100,000 workers participating; disruptions to fuel deliveries possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/6/2019, 12:00 AM until 12/11/2019, 11:59 PM (Europe/Helsinki). COUNTRY/REGION Finland

Major unions in Finland are planning to hold a three-day strike from Monday, December 9, through Wednesday, December 11, after negotiations on wages and working conditions with state mediators broke down on Thursday, December 5. The strikes are scheduled to start at 00:01 (local time) on Monday and end at 23:59 on Wednesday. Up to 100,000 workers represented by the Industrial Union, the Trade Union Pro, and the Federation of Professional and Managerial Staff YTN unions are expected to participate in the work stoppages. Representatives from the oil refining company Nesta warned on Wednesday, December 4, that the strike could significantly disrupt fuel deliveries across the country, resulting in possible transportation disruptions.

Associated demonstrations by the striking workers are possible during the work stoppage. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the event of protests.

Finland has experienced a series of nationwide strikes by various industries in recent months. The Post and Logistics Union (PAU) went on strike for two weeks in November after negotiations broke down with Posti on a new collective bargaining agreement. Prime Minister Antti Rinne resigned on December 3 following the strike.

Individuals in Finland are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations, prepare for transportation disruptions around protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
