Italy: Nationwide train disruptions reported following earthquake near Florence December 9

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake strikes north of Florence disrupting train services nationwide December 9; further aftershocks possible

The US Geological Survey (USGS) registered a 4.8-magnitude earthquake north of Florence at around 03:30 (local time) on Monday, December 9. According to the USGS, the quake hit at a depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was located at approximately 44°N 11.3°E. Although there are no reports of casualties, significant disruptions to rail networks (delays and cancelations) have been reported across the country, as authorities are conducting investigations on the state of the infrastructure. It remains unclear when normal service will resume.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days. Related transportation disruptions are likely. 


Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
